The boys secondary has had its first inspection since it joined forces with St Edmund's next door.

Wyvern and St Edmund's now operate as one school under the leadership of Headteacher, Nicola Bull, learning together in many lessons.

The Magna Learning Partnership decided to support Wyvern, which 18 months ago was struggling to continue on its own and offer a curriculum wide enough for the boys.

Now with 100 more students, GCSE progress is good and Ofsted inspectors have given it up the thumbs up after a two day visit last month.

Ofsted praised the head's commitment to ensuring the 400 plus pupils get the best education possible, noting the move to combine Wyvern with St Edmund's School has " widened the curriculum available to Wyvern pupils"

Teachers are deemed to have high expectations for boys and students have responded well.

Behaviour in lessons around the school is "calm and orderly" and pupils feel well cared for.

If there is bullying, staff deal with it quickly.

In modern foreign languages pupils are sometimes not given enough time to develop confidence in using a new language.

In the past that's led to a small number of students choosing French at Key stage 4, and the numbers of pupils achieving the English Baccalaureate have been low.

Inspectors want to see a "more structure and sequenced curriculum."

However the Ofsted report recognises the department has a new leadership and there are plans in place to bring about improvement.

Meanwhile secondary league tables published last week show St Edmund's is the second highest performing comprehensive school in Wiltshire for progress.
