Network Rail's been updating us on the situation south of Laverstock Junction.

Engineers are still working on site to figure out how the landslip happened on Tuesday afternoon (18th February).

But they've said it won't be possible to run services past the scene for the time being.

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

Network Rail say their initial inspections suggest that the embankment itself has slipped.

That's left the track unsupported and dipping for around 20 metres, making it unsafe to run trains.

The other problem that engineers have got is that the field below the embankment is the best access point - and that is currently flooded.

We're told the landslip is so severe that it can't be fixed from the trackside.

Mark Killick, route director for Network Rail Wessex, said:

"I am sorry we are not able to run trains between Salisbury and Southampton, but our priority is the safety of passengers and staff working on the trains. Our engineering teams are assessing the damage to see what repairs are needed.

"We are unable to provide a date for reopening the line at this time; this will be shared once the full extent of the damage is understood and we are clear about the repair work required."

WHAT NOW FOR PASSENGERS?

More replacement buses unfortunately.

They're already running between Salisbury and Southampton in both directions, via Redbridge and Millbrook.

Some trains will be running from Monday (24th February) on the 'Romsey loop' though.

They'll be South Western Railway services going from Romsey to Romsey via Eastleigh and Southampton.
