It's the highest level of escalation in the NHS for measuring demand against capacity and means the hospital is under severe pressure.

Operations Pressure Escalation Levels (OPEL) is a method used by the NHS to measure the stress, demand and pressure a hospital is under.

"The A&E Department at Salisbury District Hospital is currently extremely busy and has been for the past 24hrs.  We apologise if anyone experiences a delay in being seen as staff prioritise the most urgent cases.

As always we would ask that people use A&E wisely and only visit when it is a genuine emergency."
