Hardings at Fifty Six, High Street, is celebrating 60 years as a Post Office and 125 years of being owned by the same family.

The gift shop, just by the Cathedral gate, has been run by the Harding family for 6 generations now.

Current Postmaster Nicola Harding is the 3rd generation to run the Post Office there.

She's told Spire FM about tracing the history of the business:

"I found the first payslip (from the Post Office), so I know this to be true, and whilst investigating the whole family history that my great, great grandfather, Richard (Harding) bought the property 125 years ago in 1895."

Nicola says they're 'immensely proud' of their achievements and that it's all down to the hard work of staff past and present.

She also thinks their location, so close to Salisbury's most famous building and the passing tourist trade that brings, is part of the reason why they've lasted so well.

Salisbury BID Director, Chair of Salisbury Indies and owner of Casa Fina, Susi Mason, added:

"This is such a delightful achievement and many congratulations to Nicola. It's occasions like this that remind us of the importance of shopping local and independent. We want to continue celebrating independent businesses in Salisbury in years to come, and we can only do that if people continue to shop local."

Hardings at Fifty Six is marking the anniversaries by giving customers a commemorative shopping bag, if they spend over £10 in store.

The bags also say "I ❤️ Salisbury" on the reverse, to help promote the city too.

Nicola explains why they wanted to mark the milestones in this way:

"If you look round now, everybody's carrying shopping bags these days. I also feel passionately that Salisbury is a good place to shop, so if I could have our celebratory things on one side and I ❤️ Salisbury on the other side, I'd be killing two birds with one stone - congratulating and thanking everybody for shopping in Salisbury!"
