The popular Saturday morning 5k and junior 2k on Sunday have both fallen victim to the coronavirus crisis.

All parkrun events across the UK have been cancelled up until the end of March.

The global running event had already been cancelled in several countries across the world including France, Germany, Italy, the US and Canada and the move was widely expected here.

Last Saturday (14th March ) almost 450 runners turned out for the free 5k event in Churchill Gardens with 64 children taking part in the junior version the following day.

Since then the government has updated advice about social distancing and advised that large gatherings are cancelled.

Chief operating officer at parkrun Global Tom Williams has warned the closures could last even longer.

"In line with public health advice, we have taken the decision to close all parkrun events across the United Kingdom with immediate effect. Initially, this closure will be in place until the end of March, however this is largely to bring all parkrun countries into the same time frame and we very much expect closures to continue through April at least.

parkrunners won't be able to get their regular fix at Churchill Gardens.

Tom Williams says he understands the disappointment

"We know that this message may be a difficult one for you to receive, and many people will be wondering what to do without their regular weekly catch-up. Please rest assured that we are working hard to develop our strategy so that we are able to support the health and happiness of parkrunners around the world during this difficult time."

PLEA:

He's also pleaded with people not to make their own plans in Churchill Gardens.

"Remaining active is incredibly important, and we are working on ways to encourage and support that, however please do not arrange group gatherings at your parkrun venues whilst parkrun events are suspended."

Salisbury parkrun is set to celebrate its fifth birthday in June.

The event along with the city's junior version have already experienced disruption over the last few months due to the weather and flooding on the course.

REACTION:

Lee Syrett is a regular parkrunner and is often seen pacing other runners along with fellow members from the City of Salisbury Athletics and Running Club.

He's told Spire FM it is absolutely the right decision.

"It's totally the correct decision albeit disappointing for the social and wellbeing side of the running. This gives everyone an opportunity to keep training solo now ready for when it returns, whilst staying safe which is the overriding priority at this time."
