The retailers are doing their bit to ensure NHS workers are able to buy essential items as panic buying continues across the country.

Tesco has  introduced the measure for NHS staff at its large stores as " a thank-you for all they are doing."

That takes place one hour before the usual store opening every Sunday meaning customers can visit the Southampton Road store or Castle Street store at 9am and will be able to select their shopping before the checkouts open.

NHS workers will need to bring a form of ID with them to the store such as an NHS staff card.

MARKS AND SPENCER:

M&S says the  special shopping hour "for dedicated NHS and emergency service workers"  will take place for the first hour each Tuesday and Friday .

In Salisbury's New Canal store the move will apply to 830am-930am.

M&S is also supporting elderly and vulnerable residents with the same hour dedicated to them on Mondays and Fridays.

That will apply to anyone 70 and over as that is the age group recognised by the NHS as needing extra support.

The retailer says vulnerable people include those with long-term conditions, weakened immune systems and pregnant women.

"We ask our other customers to respect this request, as it's the kindness and support we show each other that will get us through this-we're all in this together."

Meanwhile Sainsbury's is also offering a similar move to help elderly and vulnerable customers.
