Both chains had previously moved to just serving takeaway but have now stepped up their response to the coronavirus crisis.

Starbucks says the move has been taken to protect customers at its Silver Street store as well as others across the UK.

The move has been taken to protect staff and customers.

Meanwhile the store on Southampton Road, which is a franchise, is currently open but will close at 5pm today (23rd March).

The team there have given Spire FM this update.

"We have lots of measures in place in prevention to stop the spreading of the coronavirus everything is take away only and our toilets are now closed to the public. We are taking this matter very seriously and we want to protect staff and members of public as much as possible, at this moment in time we believe we are still safe enough to open. We will no longer be selling hot food, Cakes only. "

Cafe chain Pret A Manager has now closed 400 UK stores including in the Old George Mall.

Last week Pret was praised for offering NHS workers free cups of coffee and discounted snacks.

Starbucks also offered a similar freebie.
