The Amesbury Neighbourhood Team and Specialist Operations joined forces today (Tuesday 31st March) to provide a visible presence in the town.

In total, 101 vehicles were stopped during the operation in the Countess Road area of Amesbury.

The force were engaging with motorists, while also targeting any criminals who may have been in the area during the day.

It was also a chance for them to encourage locals to stick to the government guidelines and highlight the risks around unnecessary travel

They say that everyone that was stopped was appreciative of the work they were doing.

Sergeant Ellerby, from Amesbury Police, said:

"We are very lucky to work in a town where people were so supportive of this kind of operation, thank you. We look forward to further engagement in the near future."

GOVERNMENT ADVICE

The UK government have issued the following advice about leaving your home in this lockdown period:

You should only leave the house for very limited purposes:

  • shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible
  • one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household
  • any medical need, including to donate blood, avoid or escape risk of injury or harm, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
  • travelling for work purposes, but only where you cannot work from home
  • Critical workers and parents of vulnerable children may leave the house to take children to and from school or their childcare provider.

They are ensuring police have the power to enforce these rules and if they believe you have broken them they can issue you with a fixed penalty notice for £60.
