Six hour battle to tackle fire at thatched cottage in New Forest

More than 60 fire fighters were called to the scene in North Gorley near Fordingbridge last night.

A neighbour alerted the homeowners and the two occupants were able to get out safely before the fire service arrived.

Nine fire engines and support vehicles from stations across Hampshire attended the scene on Ringwood Road shortly after 7pm.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue advised anyone living close by to "close windows and doors".

The British Red Cross were also sent to the scene to help the two people living at the cottage.

The aerial platform was used to battle the fire.



The fire was eventually put out at 1am but crews remained on the scene damping down.

The roof of the cottage has been completely destroyed.

No details of the cause of the fire have been released yet by Hampshire Fire and Rescue.

The pretty thatched cottage is in the small village of North Gorley, just off the A338.
