Families from the Longhedge Estate wanted to give the children (and some parents!) something fun to do during the current crisis.

Kate Quick reached out to the Longhedge community on Facebook, asking whether people would get involved with quite a unique project.

Many families got behind it and between them, they managed to create a pop-up zoo across 15 streets of the estate.

Facts and pictures of kangaroos, snakes, monkeys, hippos and many more animals were created, with children then able to go and read about them on Saturday (25th April).

Kate said around 30 people were involved from making to visiting, all conforming to government restrictions while they did so.

There was some very creative ideas by the different families

She told Spire FM:

"I saw a post by an American family who set up a pop-up zoo in their neighbourhood and i just thought it would be lovely for Longhedge to do it because it's got a really nice community feel here.

It was lovely and when we were walking around, the response from it was massive and it just kind of made us feel a bit emotional actually because everyone had put in so much effort and we had all our windows open and you could hear the children going past really enjoying themselves."

The children got a great chance to learn about animals while they can't visit a real zoo

Kate says they're not done there either, as the community have been discussing what the next thing they can do is.

She added:

"We're throwing a few themes around. We might do VE Day so the kids can learn a little bit about history and we're quite a nature loving family so we've got ideas of plants, trees and animals.

We've had some people wanting to do Disney theme and loads more so we're jusy trying to decide what to do."
