There's a plea from Youth Action Wiltshire to recognise the 'hidden heroes' looking after others at this time.

There are more than 870 young carers, aged between 5 and 18 across the county, with the charity supporting them calling for the rest of us to show them some love.

The weekly #ClapforourCarers campaign has been building momentum over the last few weeks, with people stepping outside their homes at 8.00pm each Thursday night, making some noise in appreciation of key workers.

Covid-19 has meant there's no let-up for young carers, who are looking after parents, siblings or grandparents due to disability, illness or mental health.

Young Carers often have to take on tasks around the house to help their families

They can be called in to help out with things like cooking, cleaning, shopping, personal care, arranging medical appointments and treatments, as well as emotional support.

Dawn Whiting from Youth Action Wiltshire is asking us to think of young carers while we're appreciating others at this time:

"As the current restrictions recede, economic effects and social damage will mean that the need for our work with Wiltshire's young carers will be greater than ever. However the charity has a shortfall in funding as a result of postponed fundraising events and loss of income from our wonderful Outdoor Education Centre at Oxenwood.

"So on Thursday 30th April at 8.00pm, we invite everybody to acknowledge their invisible but vital contribution when we clap for these Hidden Heroes and ask people to please consider donating to Youth Action Wiltshire."

The charity's set up a JustGiving page to boost funds for the support of young people caring for others both during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Youth Action Wiltshire works with Carer Support Wiltshire and Wiltshire Council to identify and support young people who are looking after others.
