The motorist told police he didn't realise he was going so fast.

The vehicle was clocked going more than TWICE the speed limit on the Downton Road yesterday (29th April) with officers saying the excuse given was "not acceptable."

The motorist has been reported for the offence and will be attending court.

Speed Downton Road
The speed limit on Downton Road is 30mph.

Officers have been conducting speed checks over the last few weeks after receiving a number of reports relating to motorists exceeding the speed limit on 'quieter' roads during lockdown.

Last week similar checks on Downton Road and Castle Road found more than 30 drivers breaking the limit.

Wiltshire Police say speeding will not be tolerated at any time

"We would like to remind all motorists that while traffic is lighter, the rules of the road remain the same. Reckless behaviour of this magnitude will not be tolerated as it not only puts the driver’s life at risk but the lives of others, many of whom are vital key workers, travelling to and from work. We will continue to enforce speed restrictions to prevent road traffic accidents, which places additional and unnecessary strain on the NHS and other emergency services."
