The train company decided to do something a little different to celebrate the World War Two veteran's 100th birthday today (Thursday 30th April).

They created a video message for the man who has raised over £29 million for the NHS, by tooting their horns to the tune of "Happy Birthday to you" by Turbo.

The special video features the sounds of trains operating across the Great Western network, which includes routes through Salisbury.

As well as the birthday message, GWR have gone one step further for the veteran's big day.

Today see's their GWR Intercity Express Train 800025 enter service, which has been renamed in Captain Tom's honour.

GWR’s Head of Communications Dan Panes said:

“Captain Tom truly has captured the hearts of the nation with his phenomenal fundraising achievements during the Covid-19 crisis.

Our decision to name a train in his honour followed requests from GWR colleagues and members of the public, and we wanted to make it an extra special birthday with this fun video. We hope Captain Tom has time to enjoy it on his big day.”

The 100 year-old was promoted to a Colonel for his birthday, a move which was approved by the Queen.
