First ever 'Virtual Midnight Walk' for Salisbury Hospice

The charity's not able to hold one of their biggest fundraisers this year, so they're asking us to cover 6 or 10 miles in our way to support them.

Tonight (Saturday 16th May) would have been a huge event for Salisbury Hospice, with hundreds of walkers taking to the city's streets overnight.

Instead, Covid-19 means there's a change of plan, and supporters will be doing the sponsored walk during their daily exercise or by staying at home.

There's still time to get involved, as we're simply asked to complete our 6 or 10 mile walk, run, bike ride, skate, or whatever you choose throughout the day.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

  • Choose your distance - either 6 or 10 miles and how you want to do it; walk, jog, run, cycle, do a family relay or something else
  • Choose your route - do it on your treadmill, around the sofa, in your garden, up and down the stairs, around your village or wherever works best for you
  • Start fundraising - set up a Facebook Fundraising or Justgiving page and share your challenge. The charity says every penny will make a massive difference right now

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE MIDNIGHT WALK?

It's traditionally one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for Salisbury Hospice.

Last year's event brought more than £40,000 in to them, which goes towards running their inpatient care, family support and outreach services.

The charity needs to raise £1.5 million every year towards the running of the Hospice, of the overall £2.4 million cost.

There's a reminder that when we're taking part in the #VirtualMidnightWalk, we should keep to the Government's guidance on social distancing and exercising safely.

Fancy dress is being actively encouraged too, with prizes for the best outfits!

A CHANCE TO HONOUR LOVED ONES

The Midnight Walk is usually an opportunity for people to remember loved ones who have had care at Salisbury Hospice.

The charity's setting up a Virtual Memories Board for us to leave messages and dedicate a star to friends and relatives.

That's open for anyone to use, whether they're taking part in the Virtual Midnight Walk on not - and can be found on the Salisbury Hospice website.
