The secondary had its latest Ofsted inspection just before lockdown, with the results now published.

The Trafalgar School at Downton was last checked over in 2014 and judged as 'good' then, so this inspection is a shorter one to make sure standards are being maintained.

They've kept their 'good' status after inspectors picked out a number of positive points, and just two areas for improvement.

Among the feedback highlighted included the 'ambition' of the school, 'good behaviour', 'effective safeguarding' and 'strong progress' for students with Special Educational Needs.

Inspectors also pointed out that 'this is a school which has a commendable inclusive ethos and a tremendous place in the community'.

Stewart Roderick, Headteacher, said:

"I am delighted that the Inspectors recognised the many strengths of our school and that their judgement was that The Trafalgar School at Downton continues to be a 'Good' when judged against the Ofsted framework.

"As with all inspections centered on continuous school improvement, there are always areas for further development and our focus over the next 12-24 months will be on strengthening these areas.  Most importantly, we were really pleased with the feedback to the inspection team, from a significant number of our parents, indicating the positive experience their children have at our school."

PARENT FEEDBACK

As part of the inspection process, Ofsted sends out questionnaires to parents with children at the school, asking them what they think about the education they're getting.

The Trafalgar School at Downton say they had a 'significantly higher' response than many schools get, with some great results:

  • 97% of parents felt that their child is happy at school
  • 95% felt their child was safe at school
  • 93% of parents felt that the school ensures that their child does well
  • 96% of parents/carers stated that they would recommend The Trafalgar School at Downton to others

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Two areas for improvement have been highlighted by Ofsted for the school to work on.

Inspectors said that some subject curriculums need to be more challenging for students, and there's needs to be closer scrutiny of the quality of education throughout the school by their leaders.

The school's also currently working on plans to 'reintegrate' students back in, following closures for the Covid-19 pandemic.

They've said there's a focus on 'ensuring that any disruption to their education is eradicated over the coming months'.
