Wiltshire Police have secured the powers to move on large groups of youths for the next 48 hours.

The order's been authorised after reports of 'numerous incidents' in Salisbury, involving a group of 15 to 20 young people gathering in shopping areas and being abusive to members of the public.

There have also been some cases of 'violent behaviour' too.

Police have said that it's 'paramount' that the city centre remains a safe area for people to enjoy, and anti-social behaviour 'will not be tolerated'.

WHAT IS A DISPERSAL ORDER?

The order which is now in place means officers can ask any person to leave an area and ban them from returning for 48 hours.

Anyone over the age of 10 can be asked to move on, and police are able to return those under 16 being to their home address.

Failure to comply is a criminal offence and could lead to an arrest.

Sergeant Steve Jolly from Wiltshire Police said:

"Section 35 Dispersal powers are essential in combatting anti-social behaviour within our city but I would like to stress that our officers will only use these where absolutely necessary. I would like to appeal to parents and guardians. Do you know where your children are tonight? Do you know what they are up to? Do you know who they are with? Please help us in keeping our communities and your children safe."
