Nigel McDermott admitted facilitating a child sexual offence - he'd been caught following an investigation by Sussex Police.

The 53 year old from Hawksridge in Harnham has been handed a three year prison sentence at Hove Crown Court.

He's also been ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register, been given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which will restrict his access to both children and computers.

McDermott was arrested in Crawley, Sussex in February this year after he travelled there to meet who he thought was a 13 year old girl that he'd been chatting to online.

Sussex Police Peadophile Online Investigation Team member David Sharpe said:

"This man engaged in online contact with someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl, but who was in fact a police officer.

"This arrest followed a proactive, intelligence led investigation, part of our continuing priority to protect children from sexual exploitation from those who seek to do them harm."

Enquiries have confirmed that no child was at risk in this incident.
