From 11am until 3pm today (Friday 24th July), Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service are holding the event on their Facebook page.

Anyone interested in becoming a firefighter has a unique chance of finding out what the job actually entails today.

The authority are hosting their first ever Virtual Open Day on Facebook, with a special Q&A being held at Tisbury Fire Station.

Many of their on-call stations are looking for new recruits and the Q&A will give people a chance to find out more about the application process and what level commitment is needed.

Area Manager Ian Jeary, who will be involved in the chat, said:

"We really want to encourage women, black and ethnic minority people and anyone who identifies as LGBTQ to consider applying; the fire and rescue service should reflect the communities it serves, and we're keen that everyone feels able to get involved, whether for wholetime or on-call. This live Q&A is a chance for us to address any concerns or bust some myths, so please join the conversation!

We're starting to promote the wholetime recruitment process now because we know that one of the barriers that prevents some people from applying is fitness. Over the coming weeks, we'll be providing lots of advice online and via our social media, to help potential recruits prepare and build up their fitness ahead of applications opening in October."

There will be a number of other activities happening throughout the day as well:

  • 11:00 AM - 11:30 AM Swindon Fire Station tour
  • 11:45 AM - 12:00 PM Water rescue scenario
  • 12:30 PM - 1:00 PM ALP (Aerial Ladder Platform) demo
  • 1:15 PM - 1:30 PM Cooking and Home fire Safety
  • 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Recruitment Q&A

You can take part in the open day by going to Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Service's Facebook page
