Wiltshire Council say they are working closely with care providers to make sure they can be done safely.

The county's care homes are being sent advice and information from the authority to help them prepare for visitors once again.

Each site will need to do a risk assessment and have Covid visitor policies in place to make sure they are in line with national guidance.

Kate Blackburn, Interim Director of Public Health, said:

"We know families have been waiting patiently and they will be keen to visit loved ones as soon as it is safe to do so.

We have worked with our colleagues across health and care to review the latest government advice and assess whether visiting is likely to be appropriate within Wiltshire, based on local data and public health intelligence.

We are now working closely with care providers as they prepare clear, robust plans for their own setting, as the most important consideration is to keep residents safe."

Families will be contacted by care homes when they are ready to allow visitors in, but they may need to close again if there is a local or an individual care home outbreak.

ADVICE FOR VISITORS

Wiltshire Council have also issued some advice for anyone who will be visiting when they can.

Before your visit:

  • There should be a single constant visitor per resident (e.g. the same family member visits each time), wherever possible. This is to limit the number of overall visitors to the care home and the individual resident, to reduce the risk of infection
  • Please arrange your visit in advance by email/telephone etc
  • Do not visit if you are feeling unwell and/or should be self-isolating

During your visit:

  • Please wash your hands carefully (following NHS guidance) before travelling to the home. As soon as you arrive in the home, we will ask you to wash your hands again in the presence of a staff member. You must also wash your hands before leaving the home.
  • When you arrive, we will ask you a few questions about your health and confirm that you should not be self-isolating. We will also log your visit and contact details.
  • Visitors should wear a face covering when visiting unless exempt and are advised to wash their hand thoroughly (or use hand sanitiser) before and after putting it on and taking it off.
  • Social distancing measures must be maintained during the visit. Where this is not possible due to the resident's needs, an individual risk assessment and additional measures will be required - please follow the advice of the care home staff.
  • Should visitors require PPE (which goes beyond a face covering), please follow the advice of the care home staff
