Mrs May is resigning as party leader on Friday 7th June.

Theresa May said she has done her best to deliver Brexit.

Here's her statement here:

Mrs May will stay on as Prime Minister until her successor is chosen,

Her husband - Philip - was watching on as she spoke in Downing Street.

The announcement follows a meeting between the PM and the man who represents her backbenchers - who've been very critical of her updated Brexit plan.

She said:

“I will shortly leave the job that it has been the honour of my life to hold. The second female Prime Minister, but certainly not the last."

The Prime Minister's voice broke as she left the podium.

"I do so with no ill-will, but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to serve the country I love."
