Erlestoke on Salisbury Plain will appear in episode four of 'Inside Prison: Britain Behind Bars'

The ITV show takes cameras into jails across the country with unprecedented access to see what life is like for criminals inside.

Across Britain, a third of all Prisoners are being left, 'banged up' for more than 22 hours a day.

But there are some in the system who choose to stay locked up and at HMP Erlestoke there's a wing that caters for these self isolating inmates.

Chalkboard production are behind the show and they say:

"At a time when the Prime Minister has promised a £2.5 billion investment in more prison places, this series examines the challenges presented to staff by escalating levels of violence across UK jails, and explores how officers drawn from a broad range of backgrounds, ages and experiences build and maintain relationships with prisoners from young offenders to vulnerable women."

ITV's factual entertainment commissioning editor, Satmohan Panesar, said:

"With the unrivalled scale of the access, we meet people on both sides of the bars with unbelievable stories that will simultaneously fascinate and frustrate.

The extremes of life on the inside, from unexpected acts of compassion to seemingly mundane scenarios that can spark suddenly into violence, will be laid bare through the eyes of those working for the prison service and those detained at Her Majesty’s Pleasure."

Inside Prison; Britain Behind Bars airs at 9pm on ITV tonight (17th October).
