The move comes a day after the Prime Minister advised people to avoid public venues.

The chain has more than 120 cinemas across the country including New Canal in Salisbury, Andover and Leisure World at Southampton.

Meanwhile, Showcase Cinema, which has one in Southampton's West Quay Shopping Centre, isn't closed.

It has, however, implemented a number of measures:

  • Reduced audience capacity by 50% in each auditorium to allow for vacant space between each pair of seats
  • Instituted and reinforced a COVID-19 (“Coronavirus”) staff education programme
  • Provided all of our cinemas with additional supplies of hand sanitising stations placed at high-traffic areas.
  • Initiated the cleaning of public surfaces with antiviral cleaner multiple times per day.
  • Fully briefed and trained staff on all cleaning procedure

The company says "it's a very fast moving and changeable situation" and issuing updates on its website.

"We will continue to closely monitor the situation and liaise with relevant authorities, and follow the official guidance from the UK Government. As such we are requiring that all staff not come into work if they are showing flu like symptoms.

Similarly, if a guest at the cinema is showing symptoms such as a fever, cough or shortness of breath, they will be respectfully asked to leave."

FORDINGBRIDGE:

Independent company Regal Cinema in Fordingbridge has also taken the decision to close.
